Shin Splints

Shin Splints is a general term used to describe a painful condition affecting the shins. It is caused by a number of conditions, the commonest of these being medial tibial stress syndrome. Medial tibial stress syndrome is commonly seen in athletes especially those who over train or who suffer from overpronation. Over pronation should be corrected with appropriate footwear. Rest, icing, anti-inflammatory tablets and painkillers can help symptoms. Correct training practices are important, with avoidance of over training. We have found shock wave therapy to be 70-80% successful for the treatment of shin splints in a wide range of patients; some of whom have had the condition for many years. If you need amore infromation, please click here to send us an email.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis refers to the condition of inflammation of the tight band of tissue that forms the arch of the foot. It is most often seen in middle-aged men and women, but can be found in all age groups. The condition is diagnosed by the typical symptom of focal pain deep in the heel area of the bottom of the foot. Often the pain from plantar fasciitis is most severe when you first stand on your feet in the morning. Pain often subsides quite quickly, but then returns after prolonged standing or walking. It is sometimes, but not always, associated with a rapid gain of weight. It is also sometimes seen in recreational athletes, especially runners.
Jumper’s Knee

Patellar tendinopathy- Jumper’s Knee – is a very common condition affecting the general population as well as athletic populations. The prevalence in some sports such as volleyball can be as high as 50%. People who partake in other jumping and landing sports are also at the same increased risk factor as volleyball players. Rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and specific exercises under the supervision of a chiropractor are advised. If a conservative plan of care fails to yield the desired results, then other options may be considered such as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT). If you have any question, please send us an email.

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon – Achilles Tendonitis – is the large tendon at the back of the ankle, which joins the heel bone to your calf muscles. It is a common source of pain for many individuals primarily when walking or running. It is also quite common to come about through repetitive strain, either via an increase in activity intensity or volume, or a biomechanical issue causing abnormal strain in the tendon. Shockwave therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for Achilles tendinosis, primarily through breaking scar tissue that has formed in the tendon, as well as increasing blood flow to the area though the stimulation of new blood vessel formation. This allows the body to accelerate the healing process, thereby allowing faster recovery and return to activity than traditional treatment regimes. The latest study from the American Journal of Sports Medicine showed that 3 months after shockwave therapy, 83% of patients showed either complete or good recovery, compared to 39% of patients who underwent traditional treatment techniques. If you have any questions, please send us an email.

Lateral epicondylitis more commonly known as tennis elbow, is characterized by pain on the outside of the elbow with lifting, gripping, and repetitive finger and wrist movements. Despite the name, tennis elbow is not found exclusively amongst tennis players. In fact, the most common cause of tennis elbow is extended periods of time spent using a computer keyboard or mouse, especially if one’s biomechanics are less than ideal. Pain is normally only present when performing aggravating activities, but can present as a constant dull ache in some cases. Research shows that shock wave therapy can help improve the pain of tennis elbow in some cases.
Calcific Tendonitis of the Shoulder is the condition when rotator cuff tendon is swollen and irritated due to a buildup of calcium. This can restrict range of motion of the shoulder and cause pain in the arm, neck and shoulder. There are many treatments that can be undertaken for calcific tendonitis of the shoulder, these include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, traditional physiotherapy, low level laser therapy, steroid injections and sometimes surgery. Shockwave therapy has demonstrated to be an effective therapy and an alternative to surgery.
